Does your kiddo have a desire to learn how to sew, knit, quilt, or weave? Does the idea of teaching your own child how to do these things on your own make you nervous? Do you want your kids to attend a fun summer camp with other kids their own age? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then Home Ec. Summer Camps are perfect for your kid(s)! Summer 2017 brings with it amazing, ALL NEW summer camps as well as popular camps from last year, featuring new activities and projects!
Throughout each week, campers will create projects and develop skills and a creative mindset that will keep them crafting long after camp is over. We limit the number of campers each week so our super-experienced teachers can provide one-on-one attention. The small groups also let our campers connect with one another and make new friends. By the end of the week, your kiddo will get to take home fun memories along with their fabulous handmade projects. And their newly acquired skills mean they'll have the ability to create many more.
The schedule below provides information about each of the camps. The cost includes instruction, as well as all of the supplies necessary for the crafts. Please call Home Ec. (319-337-4775) if you have any questions related to the camps!
Registration and Cancellation Policy*
In order to register for our camps, call Home Ec. at 319.337.4775 to sign up. We require payment in full at the time of sign up in order to reserve your child's spot in the camp. We require at least two weeks notice if you are going to cancel your registration to one of our camps. There will be a $50 cancellation fee taken out of your refund. If you cancel two weeks or less prior to the start of the camp, we are unable to offer a refund or store credit. No make up dates will be offered if your child misses any days of camp.
Quilting Camp

People have said it can't be done...kids finishing a quilt in a week?! You may think it is impossible, but we are here to prove otherwise! Throughout the week, the kids will learn the basics of quilting (piecing, tying, attaching a binding, etc.) while creating their very own quilt to bring home on Friday. New this year, they will be designing their own quilts, WOW! One of the kiddos favorite camps!
Print, Dye, Sew Camp

Ages 8 and up
Spend the week exploring a variety of dyeing and printing techniques. Students will have a blast indigo dyeing and ice dyeing on fabric (feel free to bring t-shirts if you would like). Students will also make drawings and learn how to create a screen and screen print on fabric. During the camp we will also be block printing and sun printing! We will use the fabric to create a tote bag, a throw pillow or stuffed animal, stationary and a zipper pouch. So much fun and creativity packed into a week of camp!
Room Decor Camp

Whether your child is an aspiring interior decorator or is in desperate need of a room makeover, this camp is for her / him! Kids will get to make super-cute projects geared at jazzing up a drab bedroom. Projects will include a wall hanging organizer, a fashionable accent pillow, a clock, and piece of embroidered art! Campers will learn how to use a sewing machine and learn basic hand sewing techniques. After this camp, your kid's room will be the envy of all their friends (and you)!
Fabric Design and Fashion Camp

Learn how fabric designers make repeated images to create yardage. We will create designs and have them printed on fabric! We will also dye and hand print fabric to create garments and accessories designed by you!
Kids: Little Big Kid Craft Camp

At Home Ec., we know all kids want to craft, which is why we are offering a camp specifically for those crafters who may not be old enough for other camps! The projects in this class are specially geared for smaller hands. Campers will get to make felted soap bars, woven coasters, make Pinecone people, pocket pals and a pillow with their own artwork on it! This camp is the perfect way to expose your little one to the amazing world of crafting!
Make a Book from Start to Finish!

Want to write and design your own book from cover to cover? In this class we will learn how to make our own paper from pulp and add petals, grass, or glitter to decorate it. We'll learn how to create images with suminagashi printing and sumi painting. We'll write our own stories and poems to put inside our books and learn different types of folded and sewn book structures to house our work. At the end of the week you'll be on your way to becoming a famous author!
Pack-Away Playhouse

Ages 6 and up
Use all your crafting skills to create a mini playhouse for your favorite action figures and toys. We will sew tiny curtains, weave mini rugs and use recyclables to build furniture and appliances. Students will learn basic stitching, weaving and sewing. We will also decoupage, construct, draw and design. When unpacked, you will have a multi room space that can be rearranged every time you play. The whole thing packs up easily to take wherever your adventures take you.
Nature Art

In this camp students will incorporate natural elements into their art. Create stick weavings, story stones, flower sun catchers, twig sculptures and more. Students will learn how to make awesome art from found objects and natural materials.
"Sewtastic" Sewing Camp

Ages 8+
One of our most popular camps is back and full of fun new projects! This is the perfect camp for any kid who wants to learn all the basics of sewing. We will spend a majority of the week learning how to use the sewing machines, while making several projects such as a zippered pencil cases, fabric baskets, pillowcases, wallets, etc. Campers will also learn very useful hand sewing techniques through embroidered wall art and felt key chains. Every camper will end the week as budding sewers, with the skills to create even more hand-sewn projects.
Embroidery and Fiber Drawing Camp

In this fun new camp learn how to turn drawings into fiber masterpieces! Campers will learn a variety of stitching and applique techniques and will stitch onto fabric, paper, cardboard and wood. We will also create an embroidery transfer using an original drawing. Sew much fun!
Patchwork Camp

Spend the week exploring patchwork! We will design a variety of patchwork projects including a sewn patchwork tote bag, a notebook cover, a patchwork collage, a patchwork stuffed animal and a pair of patchwork slippers. This camp will be super colorful, super scrappy, super creative and SUPER FUN!
